A bit of a sci-fi buff, Bishop looks forward to each new alien life form they encounter. Currently dates Anne Travers, and will marry her during the 1970s, and father a child with her by 1989.

An old NCO who served with Lethbridge-Stewart back in the mid-’50s. Left the army and became a stuntman on television. Brought back to military service by Lethbridge-Stewart, Samson (as he is more often known) has a great loyalty to Lethbridge-Stewart and will happily disobey orders if it means protecting his old friend.
Generally he’s involved in training new recruits, although he usually acts as Bishop’s second (offering advice and experience along the way) whenever they are out on the field. Has built up a strong friendship with both Anne and Bishop.

His pursuit of Lethbridge-Stewart is often dogged, and he’s not above using whatever means necessary to get to ‘the truth’. He has dragged many people down along the way, including his old colleague Larry Greene.

Lieutenant Colonel Walter Douglas
Long-time friend of Lethbridge-Stewart, they first met briefly during National Service in Korea and then later became class-mates in Sandhurst. Along with Leslie Johnston, they became known as the ‘holy trinity’. He has a much more no-nonsense approach to command than Lethbridge-Stewart, and puts his military duty above any personal attachments. Even, at times, above his wife and son.
He is the perfect second in command for Lethbridge-Stewart, due to the long time they’ve known each other, which leaves Douglas with insight into Lethbridge-Stewart that is second to none.

Owain Lethbridge-Stewart
A bit of a drifter, a seeker of spiritual wisdom, Owain is the reincarnated soul of Lethbridge-Stewart’s brother, James. And will, some ten thousand years in the future, be reincarnated as Jiva Mukta, the man who will ascend to become the Great Intelligence. Owain and Lethbridge-Stewart have an nephew/uncle relationship, with Lethbridge-Stewart opting to not get too involved in Owain’s quest for enlightenment.
Owain likes to explore Eastern mysticism, in an attempt to avoid the taint he feels as part of the lineage of the Great Intelligence. He is also, at times, an eco-warrior. He has become something of a loner on his travels, although that doesn’t stop him from sparking up quick friendships, but he never plans on carrying any of the friendships to his next destination. He has, however, built up a good friendship with Bishop, with Anne often looking on him as a little brother.

The Fifth Operational Corps
The Home-Army Fifth Operational Corps (more usually called the Fifth Operational Corps, and never HAVOC*) is the British Army’s biggest secret since 1969. There were four previous Operational Corps, formed during time of potential threat to the UK (most notably during World War II), but this is the first one to be assembled off the books and with the sole purpose of protecting the UK against extra-terrestrial attack. A black-ops team of specially selected soldiers led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
On paper HAVOC does not exist, but it is loosely connected to the Scots Guards, and has unilateral powers in its protection of the UK against Foreign Powers – extra-terrestrial threats, primarily. Its primary base of operations is located beneath Edinburgh Castle in the Castle Rock and is called Dolerite Base – a state of the art base, funded by private investors, a complete refurbishing of the Longbow UK operational centre from World War II.
The Fifth Operational Corps is what’s known as an Administrative Corps. It consists of two battalions of the standard format (approximately 650 troops), with each battalion ran by a major, both under the direct command of Lieutenant Colonel Douglas. Each battalion consists of three companies (A-C Company for each), each commanded by a captain, with a lieutenant as their 2-I-C (second-in-command). Thus, 1 Battalion is stationed at Stirling Castle, Scotland; 2 Battalion is stationed at Imber, England. (The two primary companies used in the series are 1 Battalion A Company, commanded by Captain Miles, and 2 Battalion B Company, commanded by Captain Younghusband.) As well as the military arm, there is Science & Research, which is ran by Anne Travers (Head of Scientific Research), with a small team of scientist and technical experts beneath her.
Despite appearances to the contrary, HAVOC is formed of ‘problem’ or ‘green’ personnel – Hamilton knew that to transfer the best of the British Army would arouse too many suspicions. However, to help Lethbridge-Stewart get the team up to scratch, he was assigned Lieutenant Colonel Douglas, 2nd Lieutenant Bishop and Anne Travers, and Lethbridge-Stewart was allowed to recruit a few choice officers of his own, some of whom had left military service. As a result, the Corps is far from a well-oiled unit, which can lead to some problems along the way. There is regular training, overseen by the mysterious Mr Quebec and RSM Samson Ware, at the Joint Warfare Establishment in Wiltshire for new recruits.
